Hilde Ibsen and Santosh Mehrotra at CROP
VISITING RESEARCHERS: CROP is hosting two visiting researchers for the month of June. Both are funded by the University of Bergen's SPIRE programme.
Hilde Ibsen is Associate Professor of History at the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences, Faculty of Health, Science and Technology at Karlstad University, Sweden.
Hilde works in the field of modern South African history, and she is particularly interested in democracy and sustainable development, class, gender and lifestyle issues. Her recent focus is on the rise of the new black middle class and particularly the relationship between post-apartheid South African society and the consumptive lifestyle of the Black Diamonds.
Hilde gave a lecture on the “Black Diamonds” in the Resource Centre on 3 June.
Santosh Mehrotra is Professor of Economics at the Centre for Informal Sector and Labour Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India.
Santosh is a human development economist, whose research and writings have had most influence in the areas of labour/ employment, skill development, child poverty, and the economics of education. He brings a combination of professional experience: with the Indian government as a policy maker and adviser, with international organisations as a technical expert.
Santosh will give a keynote during the summer school; “Human Development in India - towards social inclusion” on Friday 19 June.
